Little bits of history repeating.

Dear neighbors,

This week, we’ve witnessed events that feel not just unsettling—but un-American in the most fundamental sense. The founders of this country rebelled against the monarchy in England for specific reasons and we find ourselves facing the exact same tyranny.

That sounds rhetorical, but it really isn’t. Below are the specific grievances articulated in the declaration of independence:

Declaration Grievances against King George:

“For transporting us beyond seas to be tried for pretended offences” (El Salvador; Panama etc.)

“He deprived us, in many cases, of trial by jury.” (ICE)

“He kept among us, in times of peace, standing armies without the consent of our legislatures.” (California)

“He has erected a multitude of new offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people.” (DOGE)

“He made judges dependent on his will alone.” (Supreme Court)

“Obstructing the laws of naturalization for foreigners.” (Travel bans)

“Cutting off our trade from all parts of the world.” (Tariffs)

This country was not founded for a king.

The Constitution is a living promise that no leader is above the law, and that the people—not a throne—hold the ultimate authority. The very founding of America was designed to guard against exactly what we are beginning to see now: the rise of a presidency that behaves not as a servant of the people, but as a ruler above them.

That’s why we invite you to stand with your neighbors—calmly, peacefully, and with conviction—for No Kings Day, Saturday June 14th, 2025 in New Paltz, Gardiner and Kingston. Our strength as Americans has always come from unity, courage, and the willingness to stand up and speak out when something isn’t right.
