YOUR VOTE HAS NEVER MATTERED MORE

We need local people to raise their hands to run for important positions in our local government.

We also need all residents to make sure they are registered to vote and know who they want to vote for.

Our Town and County electeds make local laws that can add protections for our families, our neighbor and our environment. They can also prioritize different issues that are important to us, like healthcare, childcare, affordable housing and transport.

The midterm elections are our next opportunity to strengthen Democrat control of local government and enact local laws to fill the gaps left by our federal government.

Make sure your registered to vote. Encourage someone you know to run for one of the open positions.

How do I register to vote?

Typically you can register to vote in less than 2 minutes:
If you have a NYS issued driver's licence you can register here:

If you do not have a NYS driver's license you will need an NY.gov ID which you can get here:

These links can also be used to change a name or address. Voting in New Paltz rather than New York City can make your vote count more. Notices of change of address from registered voters must be received at least 15 days before a special, primary or general election.

What are primary elections?

The primary elections take place in the month of June and are important for deciding who will be on the ballot for the general election. Primary elections provide enrolled Democratic party members the opportunity to nominate their party’s candidates as well as to elect various party officials. New Paltz primaries will be held in June 2026 but to be on the ballot you need to start collecting support in February.

The New Paltz Democratic Committee help to ensure that candidates get the required number of signatures (‘petitions’) to get on the primary ballot. They also organize Candidate Forums so voters can meet the candidates and ask them questions about their political vision or positions on different policies.

What is early voting?

Early voting takes place for nine days before election day, ensuring everyone has a fair chance to participate in our democratic processes. In Ulster County, NY there are three locations where early voting takes place.

Any registered Democrats can vote at any of the early voting centers in Ulster county.

What positions are available?

There are several positions that are voted for in the primaries. Some are New Paltz’s legislative representatives within Ulster County. There are also several seats within the Town and Village boards that are available (including the Mayor of the Village). Most often the candidate with an endorsement from the Democratic Party stands a good chance of winning.
